For the Vane app for iPhone and iPadEffective: 27 September 2026Last updated: 27 September 2026
The short version
We have no servers. Your videos, Live Photos, and projects are never uploaded — there is nowhere to upload them to. Everything is processed on your device.
No accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking, no third-party SDKs. The app uses only Apple's system frameworks and makes no network requests of its own.
The only permission requested is "Add Photos Only." Picking videos uses the system photo picker and needs no permission; saving results needs only "Add Photos Only." The app never requests full library access and cannot see anything in your library you haven't selected.
Original details stay in your own library. By default the source video's capture date, place, and camera details are written into the new Live Photo. The capture date and place can be turned off in Settings, and none of it is ever sent to us.
1. Who provides this app
Vane (相风 in Chinese, "the app") is developed and published by gwongsam ("we"), an individual developer, and runs on iPhone and iPad. It turns videos into Live Photos, re-edits existing Live Photos, and makes the result in a format that plays on the platform you're posting to.
This policy explains how the app handles your information. The premise running through all of it: we operate no backend servers, so your videos, Live Photos, and projects never reach us. What follows describes how data moves on your own device.
2. What data the app handles
The following is created or read while you use the app. All of it stays on your device:
Category
Details
Videos and Live Photos you select
Picture, sound, and metadata read in order to preview, edit, check, and export — including the source video's own capture date, place, and camera details, if it has them
Music
Audio you choose for a project, from music in Files or the sound of another video
Projects (drafts)
Your edit recipe (trim, cover, crop, color, frame, text, speed, sound, and so on) plus a copy of the original, so you can keep editing later
On-device analysis
Results computed on the device, such as cover suggestions and saliency-based cropping. Used only to make suggestions; they never leave the device
Settings and preferences
"Where you post," the "Keep original date & place" switch, the Experiments switch, and other interface preferences
Purchase state
Whether you own Vane Pro — reported to the app on the device by Apple's StoreKit (see section 7)
The app does not request or collect: names, government ID numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, payment details, contacts, calendars, location (beyond place information already inside your source videos), advertising identifiers, or device fingerprints. It does not ask for camera, microphone, or location permission. The app has no account system; there is nothing to register or sign in to.
3. Where the data lives
All on your own device, in three places:
The app's sandbox container. Projects are stored here as a recipe plus a copy of the original. Temporary files created during processing are cleaned up each time the app launches if any are left behind.
Local preferences. Settings and preferences are kept in the system's UserDefaults, on this device only.
The system photo library. Live Photos, videos, and GIFs you save are written to the Photos app. From then on those files are managed by Photos and follow your iCloud Photos settings.
The app itself does no cloud sync and writes to no server. Whether files saved to the system library sync to iCloud is decided by your iCloud Photos setting, independently of this app.
The Share extension and the Photos editing extension (which let you use the app from other apps or from Photos), and the "Make Live Photo" shortcut, likewise process everything on the device and save results to your library.
4. What each photo permission is for
The app only works with your photo library, and requests only "Add Photos Only" — never full library access:
When
Permission needed
Notes
Picking a video or Live Photo to work on
None
Uses the system photo picker: only the items you select are handed to the app, and it cannot see the rest of your library
Saving results
Add Photos Only
Can write to your library but cannot read it
Editing the original (revertible)
None
Done through the Photos editing extension: the Photos app hands over the one item you are editing and saves the result itself; edits can be reverted in Photos at any time
The library view inside the app is also the embedded system photo picker and needs no permission. The app never requests full library access and never reads your library on its own. "Add Photos Only" can be changed at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Photos; without it, results just can't be saved to your library and everything else works as before.
5. Network access: Apple system services only
The app contains no custom networking code and we run no servers. Your videos, Live Photos, and projects are never sent anywhere by the app. Network traffic happens only in these cases, each issued by Apple's system frameworks:
Purchases. In-app purchases, price display, and transaction records are handled by Apple's StoreKit and the App Store (see section 7).
Upscaling model (only if you download it). If you tap to download the upscaling model under Settings › Experiments, the system downloads that model file from Apple. It is a download only — none of your content is uploaded — and it never happens unless you tap it.
Source links on the platform rules page open in the system browser, not inside the app. Beyond this, the app uploads no content, checks for no updates, sends back no logs, and connects to no advertising, analytics, or attribution network.
Posting to other platforms is something you do. The app only saves results to your library or hands them, through the system share sheet, to the app you choose. When you then post in WhatsApp, WeChat, Instagram, or elsewhere, that platform's own privacy policy applies.
6. What your files carry
By default the app writes the source video's capture date, place, and camera details into the new Live Photo, so it sorts to the day it was filmed and shows where it was taken.
To leave out the capture date and place, turn off "Keep original date & place" in Settings.
The app never fills in or guesses information the source video doesn't have.
These details are written only into files in your own library, and are never sent to us.
This information travels with the file. Before sending a result to someone or posting it online, turn off "Keep original date & place" before saving if you'd rather not reveal where it was filmed. Whether a platform keeps these details after you post is up to that platform.
7. Free version and Vane Pro
The app is free to download. The free version makes, edits, and saves one at a time, to any destination — no watermark, no ads, no limits.
Vane Pro is a one-time purchase (a non-consumable in-app purchase), not a subscription. It never renews and supports Family Sharing. See the app for the price.
Purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store, and we never see your Apple Account, payment method, or billing details.
The app reads purchase records locally through Apple's StoreKit, solely to determine whether you own Vane Pro.
Purchases belong to your Apple Account: after reinstalling or moving to another device, sign in with the same account and tap Restore Purchase under Settings › Vane Pro.
Refunds, parental approval, and similar matters are handled by Apple under their rules.
8. Diagnostics and crash data
The app includes no crash-reporting or performance-analytics SDK and sends back no logs of its own.
If you have enabled "Share with App Developers" under Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements, Apple may provide developers with aggregated, non-identifying crash reports and performance metrics. That data is collected and de-identified by Apple, contains none of your videos, Live Photos, or projects, and can be turned off at any time in Settings.
9. Third parties: what we don't do
Stated item by item, to leave no ambiguity:
We do not sell your personal information (including "sale" and "sharing" as defined by US state laws);
We do not use or disclose your information for targeted advertising, and the app contains no advertising SDK;
We integrate no analytics, event-tracking, A/B testing, crash-analytics, attribution, or profiling service;
The app contains no third-party SDKs and uses only Apple's system frameworks;
We do not use your videos, Live Photos, or projects to train any model, and make no automated decisions;
We receive no information from you, so there is no cross-border transfer initiated by us.
The only third party involved is Apple: in-app purchases and transaction records are handled by the App Store, and the upscaling model is downloaded from Apple (section 5). See the Apple Privacy Policy.
10. Retention and deletion
We hold none of your data, so there is no retention period on our side. How long anything lives is entirely up to you:
Projects (drafts): delete them in the app. Deleting the app removes every project along with its copy of the original.
Temporary files: cleaned up automatically each time the app launches.
Settings and preferences: removed when you delete the app.
Files saved to the system library: managed by Photos and not removed when you delete the app — delete them in Photos. Edits made to an original can be reverted in Photos.
Purchase records: they belong to your Apple Account and are managed by Apple.
You can do all of the above without contacting us, and we have no copy to delete.
11. Your rights
Under applicable law — including China's PIPL, the EU GDPR, and California's CCPA/CPRA — you have rights to be informed about, access, copy, correct, supplement, delete, and port your personal information, and to withdraw consent.
In this app, exercising those rights requires neither contacting us nor waiting for our approval, because the data has been in your hands all along:
Right
How to exercise it
Access / copy
Results are in your system photo library as standard Live Photo, video, or image files
Portability
Live Photos, videos, GIFs, and Android Motion Photos are all common formats you can copy out freely
Correction
Re-edit the project directly in the app
Deletion
See section 10 above
Withdraw consent
Change the app's photo access in Settings › Privacy & Security › Photos; turn off "Keep original date & place" in the app's settings
Object to automated decisions
The app makes no automated decisions and builds no profiles; cover and crop suggestions are only suggestions, and you decide whether to use them
If you believe your rights have not been honoured, or have any question about this policy, contact us as described in section 15. We answer within 30 days of receipt. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
12. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect children's personal information — it sends us nothing at all, and we hold no age information about any user. If you are under 14, please use the app with the consent and guidance of a guardian; parents can manage in-app purchases through Apple's Screen Time and Ask to Buy.
13. Security
The app runs in the iOS application sandbox and can reach only its own container and the photos you have authorised.
The app has no custom networking code, so there is no channel through which your videos, Live Photos, or projects could be sent out by it.
We hold none of your data, so there is no "our database was breached" risk to speak of.
Live Photos you make carry the original's capture date and place by default (see section 6) — keep that in mind before sharing.
At the same time, please note: the security of the device itself underpins all of this. Set a passcode, enable Face ID or Touch ID, and keep the system updated. No technical measure can guarantee absolute security.
14. Changes to this policy
If the way the app handles data changes, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date at the top. For material changes we will say so prominently inside the app and, where required, ask for your consent again. Earlier versions of this page can be read in this site's public code repository.
